+ HAYWOOD COUNTY
Formed in 1808, Haywood County is located in the western part of the state, nestled deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The last shot of the Civil War east of the Mississippi was fired in Waynesville on May 9, 1865 when the Thomas Legion of the Confederate Army skirmished with the 2nd NC Mounted division of the Union Army. A monument to this event can be found on Sulpher Springs Road in Waynesville.
Much of Haywood County is located with the Pisgah National Forest, including Cold Mountain, made famous by a novel written by Charles Frazier, and later developed into a major motion picture starring Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and Rene Zellweger. Ironically, despite North Carolina’s well established film industry, much of the movie was shot in Romania, where the Carpathian mountains were used to represent the Blue Ridge Mountains.
